Absract Videos

Nai Harvest - Sick On My Heart

There is no relationship between the lyrics and the visuals however there is a relationship between the beat of the music and the visuals because when the beats become faster per minute, the visuals also speed up leading this music video to be synchronous to the visuals  and also conforms with the conventions of an abstract video due to the bright colours shown in 'Sick on My Heart' by Nai Harvest.

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?

The sound waves doesn't just show the beats playing in this music video but also matching the artists vocals. The visuals also have a relationship with the lyrics such as at (2:14) of the clip, the artist says 'Simmer down and pucker up' and the visuals on the music video shows lips kissing therefore portraying how the lyrics and visuals both correspond.

Performance Videos

The 1975 - Sex

In this music video, the band and especially the star of the group gives an emphasis of looking at the camera throughout their performance which is called the 'male gaze'. It is used to attract and connect with the audience and fans who view the video. The band- The 1975 may have used black/white lighting to give off the meaning of their band name 'The 1975'.
The Killers - Somebody Told Me

The Killers break the fourth rule by using direct eye contact (1:29) which is a common feature used in performance videos unlike narrative videos which tend to maintain a naturalistic approach. They also use the 'star image' of the main vocalist to advertise and sell their name and album/songs.

Narrative Videos

Alt-J - Breezeblocks

Here, in this narrative music video the lyrics match the visuals for example the beginning scene depicts the second verse of the lyrics 'But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks'. This illustrates that the music video is contradicting Goodwin's theory as they are not ignoring the common narrative to be the base of the video.

The Wombats - Techno Fan

In this music video, The Wombats have decided to use both narrative and performance and by the singer of the band acting out as the main character in the narrative gives the viewers a connection and a good understanding of the song other than making their video look realistic. As the ending of the chorus of the song, it sang '..I never knew I was a techno fan'. Here the lighting flashes on and off creating a dramatic mood by developing the scene to resemble a club which gives thrill to the audience but also makes the lyrics memorable. 'Techno Fan' includes repetition and performance to make it easier for the audience to watch without losing interest.
